French door pairs are the most requested configuration — two equal-width doors that swing from a center astragal, passing light between rooms while creating a visual and acoustic barrier when closed. We build them in full-glass, divided-light, and partial-glass configurations. Glass options include clear, frosted (for privacy without blocking light), textured, and leaded or beveled for more traditional interiors. The glass is integrated into the frame design from the start — not set into a frame sized for solid panels.
Double door configurations — two doors hinged from opposite jambs — work well for wider openings where French door proportions would create panels that are too narrow. We size double doors to maintain the right visual proportion for the opening width and the room's scale. Transom lights above the door unit are common for openings over eight feet; we build those as part of the unit rather than as a separate fill.
Full-height glass panel configurations create a near-transparent wall between spaces — appropriate for contemporary interiors where the goal is visual separation without physical weight. We frame these in wood matching the interior millwork, using tempered glass, and set them in a track system that allows the panels to swing or slide as needed. For home offices, the ability to close off the space visually while light passes through makes a real difference in how the room feels during the day.
For indoor-outdoor connections — a living room opening to a covered patio, or a kitchen to a courtyard — we build exterior-rated French door systems using wood species and finishes appropriate for weathered exposure. These are full exterior door systems, not interior doors installed outside, and they're built with the sealing, threshold, and hardware systems that outdoor use requires.
What Custom Sizing and Wood Species Make Possible
- — Sized to your exact opening — non-standard widths are the norm. Older California homes frequently have passageways that don't conform to standard door widths. Custom sizing means the door fits the opening, the reveal is consistent, and the proportions are right for the space — regardless of the rough framing dimension.
- — Glass option selected for your privacy and light goals. Clear glass maximizes light transmission. Frosted or reeded glass passes light but obscures view. Leaded and beveled glass is appropriate for traditional interiors where the glass becomes a decorative element. We work with your glass supplier or source directly — the choice is yours.
- — Wood species matches the rest of your interior. A room divider is a prominent architectural element. We build it in the same species and finish as your other interior doors so it reads as part of the home's design language, not a feature that was added later.
The Build Process
From consultation to installed room divider, here's how every French door and divider project unfolds.
Consultation
We visit your home, measure the opening, assess the surrounding space, and discuss configuration options — hinged, sliding, glass type, and how the unit will integrate with your existing trim and woodwork.
Design
We sketch the door design, confirm dimensions, and finalize wood species, glass choice, and hardware. Glass options are shown in context so you can see how they'll affect the room's light and privacy.
Build
Your doors are built from raw lumber in our shop. Glass frames are dimensioned and rabbeted during the build — the glass is set into a frame designed for it, not adapted to fit.
Finish
Stain, paint, or clear-coat applied in multiple coats with sanding between each. Glass is installed after finishing so the frame gets full coverage without masking.
Install
We deliver and install the full unit, hang and adjust hardware, verify glass is set and sealed correctly, and walk you through operation. Trim is fitted to complete the opening if included in scope.
