For most custom entry or interior doors, plan for 8 to 12 weeks from signed agreement and deposit to completed installation. Complex doors — arched tops, leaded glass, carved panels, or unusual wood species — can take 12 to 16 weeks.

That timeline includes: sourcing and drying lumber if needed, fabrication in our shop (joinery, assembly, sanding), a multi-coat finishing process with cure time between coats, and scheduling installation. We don't rush the finishing stage — cure time is real, and a door finished too quickly will fail prematurely.

We'll give you a specific timeline estimate during your consultation, and we communicate proactively if anything changes. Timeline commitments are formalized in the written project agreement.

Both. We fabricate and install. The installation is not an afterthought — it's as important as the build itself. A handmade door poorly fitted to its opening is a waste of the craftsmanship that went into it.

On installation day, we fit the door to the opening (trimming and adjusting as needed), hang it on the hinges, set the latch and strike plate, install weather-stripping on exterior doors, and fit the threshold. We don't leave until the door swings freely, seals completely, and latches cleanly.

If you need only a door slab (you have your own installer), we can accommodate that on a case-by-case basis. But most of our clients prefer the full package.

We work in a wide range of domestic and imported hardwoods and softwoods. Our most commonly used species include:

For exterior doors: White oak, mahogany, teak, ipe, Douglas fir, and Spanish cedar. These species resist moisture, UV exposure, and the dimensional movement that comes with exterior use. We select the species based on your climate exposure (coastal, inland valley, hillside) and your finish preference (stained vs. painted).

For interior doors: Red oak, white oak, walnut, maple, poplar, and cherry. Paint-grade projects typically use poplar or maple. Stain-grade projects where grain character matters use oak, walnut, or cherry depending on the desired look.

If you have a specific species in mind that isn't listed, ask us. We have access to specialty hardwood suppliers and can source most commercial lumber species with advance time.

The short answer: everything structural, almost everything cosmetic, and the entire process.

Construction: Store-bought doors — even "solid wood" ones — are typically built around a composite or engineered wood core with a thin wood veneer face. Our doors are solid wood throughout, with traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery. That means they can be planed, re-hung, repaired, and refinished indefinitely. A veneer door cannot.

Dimensions: Store doors come in standard sizes. Your opening may not match. Shimming and trimming a pre-hung unit to fit a non-standard opening creates gaps, introduces operational problems, and looks wrong. Our doors are built to your exact rough opening.

Design: Standard doors are whatever the manufacturer decided to make. Our doors are whatever you want — panel configuration, glass placement, wood species, profile details.

Longevity: A quality solid wood door, properly finished and maintained, lasts the life of the house. Most manufactured doors are warranted for 1–2 years and typically need replacement within 15–20 years.

It depends on the scope and value of the work. California's Contractors State License Board (CSLB) requires a contractor license for most construction work over $500 in combined labor and materials. Door replacement and installation almost always exceeds that threshold.

Master Door and Crown is fully transparent about licensing requirements on every project. Where California law requires a licensed contractor to be the contracting party or to supervise the work, we work in collaboration with licensed contractors to ensure your project is completed legally and correctly. You will always know exactly who is performing each part of your project and under what license.

Yes. Both are core services. Our most-requested work is custom front entry doors, but we also build full suites of interior doors for home renovations, custom barn and sliding doors for interior applications, and individual interior doors for specific openings.

Exterior and interior doors have different design and material requirements. Exterior doors must handle moisture, UV exposure, temperature swings, and security loads. Interior doors are built for aesthetics, acoustic performance, and smooth daily operation. We design and spec each accordingly.

Yes — this is one of the primary advantages of custom work. We build doors to complement your home's specific architecture, not to look like a catalog option dropped in front of it.

We work in all residential styles common in Ventura County: craftsman bungalow, Spanish colonial and revival, mid-century ranch, Victorian, contemporary, and transitional. During the consultation, we look at your home's existing trim profiles, window styles, roofline proportions, and any reference images you've collected. The door design emerges from that conversation.

If you have existing interior doors you want to match — or existing trim profiles you want to replicate or extend — we can work from physical samples and field measurements to replicate them exactly.

Yes. We warrant our fabrication and installation workmanship against defects for a period specified in your written project agreement. If something we built or installed fails due to a defect in our work, we will return to address it at no charge within the warranty period.

The warranty does not cover normal weathering of exterior wood (all exterior wood requires periodic maintenance), damage from improper care, structural movement in the building, or impact damage. We provide specific care instructions for every door we install — following them is the most important thing you can do to protect your investment.

Exterior wood doors in coastal environments like Ventura and Oxnard require more frequent maintenance than inland applications. We'll be honest with you about that during the consultation so you can make an informed decision about wood species and finish type.
