Twenty Years Building Custom Wood Doors in Ventura County
Master Door and Crown is not a company with a roster of installers. It's one builder with two decades of experience and a deep respect for what wood can do.
Built on Wood, Not on Shortcuts
I started working with wood as a teenager, helping a neighbor build furniture in his garage. There was something about the material that stuck with me — the way it smells when it's fresh-cut, the way grain tells you which direction the tree grew, the way a well-fitted joint is tighter and truer than anything you can buy pre-made.
By my mid-twenties I was framing houses and doing trim work on residential builds throughout Ventura County. I learned fast that most of the doors going into those houses were disappointing — hollow cores, pre-hung units with hairline gaps at the threshold, panel doors that would warp in the first coastal winter. Homeowners deserved better, and the craft of building a real door from scratch was being lost.
I started Master Door and Crown to fill that gap. The name reflects the two things I do most: build doors from raw lumber, and install the crown moulding and trim that makes a room feel complete. Everything I build starts as raw stock — I select the wood, mill it to dimension, cut the joinery, and assemble the door by hand in my shop. No blanks, no panels pulled from a manufacturer's catalog.
Twenty years later, I've built doors for hundreds of homes across Ventura County. Every single one was built to a specific opening, for a specific client, with wood selected for that project. That won't change.
When you work with Master Door and Crown, you're working with me directly — from the first conversation to the final fit check. I take on a limited number of projects at a time because that's the only way to do this work right.
Why Wood. Why Custom. Why One Craftsman.
These aren't just talking points. They're the reasons every decision in this business is made the way it is.
Why Wood
Wood is the only material that improves with careful maintenance. It can be repaired, refinished, and restored. A well-built solid wood door outlasts any fiberglass or steel substitute — and it does so while looking better every decade. I work in wood because nothing else justifies the word "custom."
Why Custom
Standard sizes are a convenience for manufacturers, not homeowners. Your opening is what it is. Your architecture has its own proportions. Your home has a character that an off-the-shelf door can't honor. Custom means built for your home specifically — not adjusted to fit, not shimmed in, but built to belong.
Why One Craftsman
When a company sends five different people to your house, no single person is responsible for the result. When I come to your home, I am responsible — for the measurement, the build, the delivery, and the fit. That accountability is built into how I run this business. It's also why my clients refer their neighbors.
The Build Process
From the first call to the last screw, here's how every project at Master Door and Crown unfolds.
Inquiry & Consultation
We start with a conversation — phone or email — to understand your project. I'll ask about the door type, your home's style, your budget range, and your timeline. If it sounds like a good fit, we schedule an in-home visit.
Design & Measurement
I come to your home, take precise measurements of the rough opening, and discuss design options in context. I can show material samples and hardware options on-site. You'll leave the meeting knowing exactly what we're building and why.
Fabrication
Work begins in my shop. I select and mill the lumber, cut all joinery by hand, and assemble the door with waterproof glue and mechanical fasteners. For complex doors with glass or carved panels, this stage takes the most time — and the most care.
Finishing
Every door receives a multi-step finishing process appropriate to its use — exterior or interior, painted or stained. Exterior doors get UV-resistant topcoats applied in multiple passes with sanding between coats. I don't rush this step.
Installation
Installation day is when everything comes together. I bring the door to your home and fit it to the opening — adjusting hinges, trimming if needed, setting the latch and strike, installing weather-stripping, and fitting the threshold. I don't leave until the door operates perfectly.
Aftercare
I provide care instructions specific to your door's finish and wood species, and I'm available if questions come up after installation. Exterior wood doors need periodic maintenance — I'll tell you exactly what to do and when, so your door stays in top condition for years.
Transparency on Licensing
Working Within California's Contractor Licensing Requirements
Master Door and Crown works in collaboration with licensed general contractors and specialty contractors where California law requires it, ensuring every project is completed safely, legally, and correctly. California's contractor licensing requirements vary based on project scope and total contract value. I am transparent about this with every client from the first conversation — you will always know exactly who is doing what on your project and why. My goal is a result that's built right, permitted correctly where required, and stands behind by everyone involved.
